The Victoria Staycation
We’re fast approaching the summer holidays, the time when most of us are usually checking tickets, packing suitcases and getting ready to jet off in to the sunshine.
Circumstances may mean that holidaying abroad or possibly even in another part of the UK is out of the question this year. While a staycation may not necessarily be everyone’s first choice on the list of potential destinations, there’s no reason a home-based holiday can’t be turned into a five star experience-particularly if the weather is on our side!
The elements that make for a holiday to remember often include sun, sea, relaxation, entertainment and good food. And recreating that vibe more locally is a project plenty of enthusiastic fun seekers are prepared to embrace wholeheartedly!
At The Victoria Walshaw, one of Bury’s leading dining pubs, we’ve put together our list of the top ways you can recapture that holiday feeling from home.
Keep cool in the pool
Any plans to immerse yourself in the ocean waves may have to be postponed for the time being so why not use the opportunity to have a go at building your own pool? It’s easier than it sounds and needn’t cost the earth especially if you use leftover pallets for the structure. A bamboo surround applied to the outside will give an aesthetically pleasing finish to the design.
So if you’re feeling creative, this step-by-step guide shows you how:
Of course, you could always cheat and buy an inflatable version…either option is perfect for cooling off when the temperatures start to soar.
A sprinkler attachment will enhance the effect further and the kids will love it too.
We bet they’d also love these solar-powered floating LED lights which change colour to give you a real party atmosphere!
Life’s A Beach
If you’re longing for the feel of sand under your feet, you could always take things a step further by bringing the beach right to your garden!
Achieving the desired effect doesn’t require you to dig up your entire lawn though-one seaside themed section will be enough to convince you that’s where you actually are! Add loungers or a hammock, a parasol and maybe a firepit, then imagine sitting back and relaxing with a long, refreshing drink in your own sunny oasis-you’ll be the envy of your neighbours!
Sundowners, cocktails, unidentifiable “on the house” liquor after your meal ….. drinks are a huge part of the holiday for many of us. Over lockdown, backyard bars became a huge trend, offering the freedom to mix your drinks exactly as you like them.
For those who still like to get out and about, The Victoria offers a wide range of drinks choices for you to enjoy either in our bar and restaurant, or our fantastic beer garden. Pina Colada or a pint, come along and find your signature “staycation” beverage!
If you’ve ever dreamed of holidaying in a traditional gypsy style caravan then maybe this is the year to make it happen- albeit without actually leaving your garden.
Investing in an authentic Romany wagon would make a fantastic alternative to a summer house. Given its versatility, you can camp overnight in it, shelter from the hottest sun and use all year round as a playhouse for the younger members of the family.
Storytelling round the campfire on an evening seems like the natural thing to do when such a lovely feature is part of the scene.
Good Food, Good Life
One of the undeniable pleasures of being on holiday is eating out. That goes for staycationing too! Our menu at The Victoria has something to suit every palate which is why dining with us is a must when it comes to your Lancashire staycation experience. We pride ourselves on serving locally sourced, fresh food in a characterful and welcoming setting.
Our takeaway service means that you can also enjoy a delicious meal in your own garden al-fresco style on a summer evening if you prefer.
So, all in all, far from feeling you’re missing out on getting away this summer, a staycation is a chance to combine all the elements that make a holiday special right here at home.
Who knows, maybe you’ll even decide to do it again next year!
